7056DuomoCeiling * Kathy and I made the 463 step trek up to the top of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore or commonly called the Duomo. Part of the way up, there is a narrow parapet winding around the inside of the dome. From this vantage point, the inside of the cupola is visible. When we get to the top, we will be walking above this ceiling and around the stained glass on the cupola. * 900 x 600 * (90KB)

7065ClimbingIlDuomo * We are almost there. If I had read some of the reviews prior to doing this, I probably wouldn't have done it. There were several warnings that claustrophobics should not even attempt it. I saw several people bail out and walk back down after a few twists and turns of the narrower part of the stairways near the bottom. I so wanted to join them, but I had to get to the top. * 900 x 600 * (105KB)

7072CampanileFromDuomo * What an incredible view. It was a beautiful day and we spent an hour walking around and around and seeing new things each time. This is the view of Giotto's Campanile or Bell Tower which is also part of the Cathedral Complex. * 483 x 725 * (105KB)

7129BackDownFromDuomo * Time to go back down. We used some of the same stairways that we used on the ascent, but some were different to help the flow of the crowds. Like on the ascent, the stairways were poorly lit, damp in places and many were so narrow, two people could not pass next to each other. * 900 x 600 * (71KB)
