53867pOldCourthouse * This is in Vandalia, Illinois. It was founded in 1819 to be the capital of the new state of Illinois. In the foreground is a life-size bronze statue of Lincoln. He began his career as a state rep at the State Capitol in Vandalia from 1834 to 1839. * 511 x 700 * (109KB)

53889pMadonnaOfTheTrail * This statue, also with the Old State Capitol in the background, is the Madonna of the Trail. It marks the end of the National Road which was the first highway built by the federal government. The statue was donated in 1928 by the DAR in memory of the pioneer mothers of covered wagon days. * 700 x 685 * (153KB)
